What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an essential part of Traditional Oriental Medicine, a comprehensive system of health care with a continuous history of over 2000 years. Oriental Medicine includes acupuncture, Chinese herbology, bodywork, dietary therapy and exercise.  All of these are based on the principles of Traditional Oriental Medicine.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Integrated Medicine whereby very fine, sterile needles (or pins) are inserted at specific points on the body according to the philosophy of Chinese Medicine.

Oriental Medicine is based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of Western Medicine, it works with the natural energy inherent within all living things to promote the body’s ability to heal itself.  Ancient Chinese healing practitioners recognized a vital energy behind all life forms and life processes. They called this energy “Qi” (pronounced “chee,” although energy is only a small part of the meaning of Qi), and this Qi is concentrated in channels, also known as meridians, briefly there are 8 extra ordinary channels, 12 main channels, 12 divergent channels, 12 tendino-muscular channels, 14 Luo channels, 1 great Luo channel, innumerable Sun Luo channels and many internal pathways. Each pathway is associated with a particular physiological system and internal organ. It is these channels that regulate a human being.  Dis-ease is considered to arise due to imbalance of energy in the meridians and their associated physiological systems.

When the flow of Qi in these channels becomes disturbed we become ill, although the illness may be so subtle that we are not aware of it at first or we are able to cope with it easily.  If this illness is left unchecked it can progress into a more serious or deeper illness that affects other organs/channels of the body if the natural regulation systems of our bodies are unable to resolve the disruption.

What acupuncture does is changes the flow of Qi in the channels in quantity and/or quality in order to direct us towards harmony and balance.  A balanced person will be able to cope more easily with any illness that they have and it will help them resist the development of any disease.  Acupuncture aims to rebalance the body’s natural energies thus promoting health, balancing the body, mind and emotions.  You do not already need to be ill to benefit from acupuncture, a person who is well may have acupuncture to help them remain healthy and balanced therefore reducing the likelihood of any illness in the future. Stems and Branches Acupuncture

A ‘Stem and Branch’ practitioner will work with the patients own constitutional energies, the energies that they are born with he will also taking into account the energies of the day and the environment, hence specific points are carefully calculated and considered with each individual at each treatment.  It is an integrated, natural, gentle, yet powerful form of Acupuncture.

Stems and branches is a series of many interacting cycles and each cycle has its own characteristics at different points in its cycle (like the seasons of the year).  Each of these cycles has its own way that it affects the world we live in. The stems and branches system is how we determine which aspects are prevalent in a particular person and on a particular day and how those aspects interact with each other.

A birthchart is created for the date and time (if known) of your birth, this gives the energies that were in abundance at the time you were born.  From this we can determine our strengths and weaknesses energetically.  We become ill in our weak aspects easily and we also get better from that illness more easily.  If we become ill in our strong aspects it is harder to get better as that is supposed to be our strong aspect and it will have taken longer for us to become ill in our strong aspect or the illness is particularly strong.

Stems and Branches also gives us the energies of the day and from that some meridians are forbidden to use on particular days as they are less effective or more prone to cause some difficulties.  But the practitioner needs to determine if it is appropriate for a particular patient.

This form of acupuncture seeks to treat the person and not the problem (symptom). If a person is balanced and harmonious then they will be strong enough to expel any illness. Stems and Branches acupuncture works in harmony with the natural rhythms of the planet and the people upon it.
